Nehemiah 9:16–9:21
Wilderness rebellion is met by sustaining mercy
Pride refuses the return and makes a calf
They and their fathers dealt proudly, hardened their necks, and hearkened not. They refused to obey, were not mindful of wonders, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. They made a molten calf and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and wrought great provocations.
Mercy still leads, feeds, and clothes them forty years
Yet thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. The pillar did not depart. Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, withheldest not manna, and gavest water. Forty years thou didst sustain them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
The prayer makes God's material care more persistent than the rebellion it refuses to hide. Wilderness hardship is not turned into a demand that leaders starve people into endurance.
How this should shape us
Name real wrong without withholding food, water, guidance, and time to change. Mercy that restores is bodily as well as verbal.
