Nehemiah 9:32–9:37
Confession reaches Persian rule and bodily distress
Do not let the hardship seem little
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee that has come on us, on our kings, princes, priests, prophets, fathers, and all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. Thou art just in all that is brought upon us; we have done wickedly. Our kings, princes, priests, and fathers have not kept thy law.
Persian kings eat the land's yield and rule bodies
They have not served thee in their kingdom, though thou gavest them the land and its goods. Behold, we are servants this day. The land thou gavest our fathers yields increase to the kings thou hast set over us because of our sins. They have dominion over our bodies and over our cattle at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
Confession and imperial extraction stand in the same prayer. Naming God's justice does not make every burden deserved, and it does not excuse Persian domination of produce, livestock, and persons.
How this should shape us
Separate harms your community caused from harms imposed by empire or employer. Seek repentance and material relief together. Do not require exploited people to call abuse a gift.

Best judgment: The prayer links present imperial conditions with communal sin theologically; that confession cannot establish an exhaustive economic or political cause.
