Numbers 15:27–29
One Unintentional Offender Receives the Same Rule
One person, one goat, the same rule for native and sojourner
If any soul sin through ignorance, then that soul shall bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering. The priest makes atonement for the soul that sins ignorantly, and it shall be forgiven. You shall have one law for him that sins through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel and for the stranger that sojourns.
The individual case is scaled down from the congregation's bull and goat, not morally downgraded. Access to this offering does not depend on ancestry.
A goat does not erase a victim
Ignorance in this law is about unwitting breach of commandment, not a magic word that wipes civil harm. Sacrifice does not replace apology, repayment, or prevention, and it does not let a community forget the person who paid for the mistake.
Equal ritual standing for the sojourner is the unit's insistence. Equal repair to a harmed neighbor still belongs beside it.
How this should shape us
Let a person who failed without meaning to have a way back, on the same terms as everyone else. Then make the human repair anyway. A offering is not a cone of silence over a victim.
