Tassels Turn Seeing into Remembering and Doing
Fringes and a blue cord turn seeing into remembering
The LORD tells Moses to tell Israel to make fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and to put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue. It shall be a fringe, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them, and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to go a whoring.
That you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. Tassels are a visible prompt for a delivered people, not a fashion of superiority.
A commanded Jewish sign is not a toy or a taunt
Heart and eyes are named as the wander that the seeing is meant to interrupt. The exodus identity grounds the holiness, not the thread by itself. Tassels do not make wearers better than neighbors, authorize antisemitic mockery, or give later Christians a costume to put on as if it replaced Israel.
A symbol that does not lead to doing the commands has already failed the unit's purpose. Justice is not optional because the garment is correct.
How this should shape us
Use reminders that actually return you to what you were told to do. Do not mock Jews who keep tzitzit, do not play dress-up with their commandment, and do not let a visible piety stand in for justice. Remembering is for doing.
