The Donkey Sees the Angel Balaam Cannot See
Anger meets the road, and the donkey sees the sword
God's anger is kindled because Balaam goes. The angel of the LORD stands in the way for an adversary. Balaam is riding his ass, and two servants are with him. The ass sees the angel with his sword drawn and turns into the field. Balaam strikes her to turn her back to the road.
Three times the animal sees what the seer does not. In a vineyard path she crushes Balaam's foot against a wall and is struck again. In a narrow place with no turning she falls under him and is struck a third time with a staff.
The opened mouth exposes Balaam; opened eyes restore the limit
The LORD opens the ass's mouth. She asks what she has done, that Balaam has struck her these three times. He answers that she has mocked him, and if he had a sword he would kill her. She reminds him she has been his ass since she was his; was she ever wont to do so? He says no.
The LORD then opens Balaam's eyes. He sees the angel, bows, and falls flat. The angel asks why the ass was struck. If she had not turned, the angel would have slain Balaam and saved her alive. Balaam confesses he has sinned; he did not know the angel stood in the way; if it displeases, he will go back. The angel says go with the men, but only the word I speak, that thou shalt speak.
The satire is about sight and violence, not about how an animal's larynx worked. The story does not authorize beating an animal, and it does not make blindness or disability a moral emblem. Balaam is the one who cannot see, then threatens to kill the creature that saved him.
How this should shape us
Pay attention to a creature that refuses a deadly path, and do not answer frustration with blows. If you have been given leave to go, you still may not say whatever a patron wants. Leave miracle mechanics uninvented, and do not use this scene to insult people who cannot see.
