Balak Dismisses Balaam, Who Announces a Star and Scepter
Honor is withdrawn; the mouth is not for sale on the way out
Balak tells Balaam to flee to his place. He thought to promote him to honor, but the LORD has kept him back from honor. Balaam answers that he told Balak's messengers already: even a house full of silver and gold would not let him go beyond the LORD's commandment, to do good or bad of his own mind. He will now advertise Balak what this people will do to his people in the latter days.
A star and a scepter rise in a distant poem
The oracle again names opened eyes and the vision of the Almighty. He sees him, but not now; he beholds him, but not nigh. A star comes out of Jacob, a scepter rises out of Israel, and smites the corners of Moab, and destroys all the children of Sheth. Edom becomes a possession; Seir becomes a possession for his enemies; Israel does valiantly. Out of Jacob comes he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remains of the city.
The poem looks past the immediate hire toward royal, violent rule over Moab and Edom. Later Jewish and Christian readers have heard a messianic hope in the star and scepter. Those are later readings and must be labeled as such. The lines do not name a modern candidate, election, nation, or date, and they do not license anyone to strike a people now.
How this should shape us
When payment is cancelled, do not invent a more useful oracle to win it back. If you hear star and scepter, keep them in this poem's latter-day horizon. Do not pin them on a ballot, a flag, or a date, and do not treat later messianic reception as if the verse itself had printed a name.
