Gershon Is Counted and Assigned Tent Fabrics
Levi is counted from one month, because this count is about belonging and charge
In the wilderness of Sinai Moses numbers the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, every male from a month old and upward. This is not the twenty-and-upward war muster. Infants in a priestly tribe are being registered for a hereditary charge that will later include adult carrying work.
Gershon's clans are Libni and Shimei. Their numbered males from a month old are 7,500. They pitch behind the tabernacle westward, and Eliasaph son of Lael is chief. A hereditary camp slot still does not tell you a modern child's aptitude, and it does not authorize putting children to labor.
Gershon keeps the skins and cloth of the dwelling
Their charge is the tabernacle, the tent, its covering, the hanging for the door, the hangings of the court, the court door hanging, and the cords of all that service. Background fabric is named as real sanctuary work. It is not filler behind the ark.
Readers who treat coverings as inferior because they are not gold furniture have already ranked people the text does not rank. Gershon's west camp is part of how the holy place can be taken down and live again.
How this should shape us
Count the people whose work is easy to ignore, and name their actual load. Do not use a family assignment to decide a child's future, and do not call support work unspiritual because it is cloth, cord, and covering.
