Levites and Redemption Money Replace the Firstborn
Levites and livestock stand in; money covers the remainder
The LORD takes the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the Levites' cattle instead of Israel's cattle. The Levites are his. Substitution is corporate and material: people for people, animals for animals, grounded in the same firstborn claim.
The numbered firstborn exceed the numbered Levites by 273. Those 273 are to be redeemed, five shekels apiece by the sanctuary shekel, twenty gerahs to the shekel, and the money is given to Aaron and his sons. The payment is a legal remainder, not a price tag on a soul and not a market in persons.
Redemption silver is accountable transfer, not a fee to invent
Moses takes the redemption money of the 273 and gives it to Aaron and his sons according to the word of the LORD. The amount is specified, the population difference is specified, and the recipients are the priestly house charged with the sanctuary.
Five shekels must not be used to justify buying people, to let religious leaders levy unaccountable fees, or to teach that a human being's worth equals a weight of silver.
How this should shape us
When money stands in for a remaining obligation, write the rate, the reason, the count, and who receives it. Never talk as if a person was purchased. Never let clergy pocket 'redemption' funds without a rule the community can see.
