Israel Keeps Passover at Sinai
Passover is kept at Sinai, dated before the book's opening census
In the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt, the LORD tells Moses that the children of Israel shall keep the passover at its appointed season, on the fourteenth day between the evenings, according to all its rites and ceremonies. Moses speaks, and they keep it in the wilderness of Sinai.
Numbers 1 opened on the first day of the second month. This unit is dated a month earlier. The book is not trying to hide the calendar. Memorial time and muster time are being braided. The nonchronological placement is not deceit.
The appointed rites remain Israel's rites
They keep it according to all that the LORD commanded Moses. Wilderness location does not invent a new festival. It continues the exodus night as commanded.
Christian readers may remember later meals only after leaving this Passover with the people who kept it. The unit does not authorize appropriation that erases living Jewish practice.
How this should shape us
Keep a community's memorial on its own terms and calendar, even when the surrounding story is arranging other things. Do not call a rearranged date a lie, and do not take Passover from the people who still keep it.
