Proverbs 14:5–9

Wisdom, folly, teachability, and moral perception — A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will…

A faithful witness will not lie; a false witness will utter lies

A faithful witness will not lie; a false witness will utter lies. The couplet is blunt because the act is blunt. Court, neighborhood, and congregation all live or die on this. A scorner seeks wisdom and does not find it; knowledge is easy to the one who understands. Seeking while sneering is not seeking. Go from a foolish person when you perceive no knowledge on the lips. Distance here is self-protection from empty talk, not contempt for the uneducated and not abandonment of someone who needs care.

Prudence understands its own way; fools treat sin as a joke

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand their way; the folly of fools is deceit. Fools mock at sin; among the righteous there is favor. Understanding your way is moral self-knowledge, not self-absorption. Deceit is folly's method. Mocking sin is entertainment built on harm. Favor among the righteous is loyal welcome, not a club of the already impressive.

How this should shape us

Tell the truth on the stand and off it. Leave a conversation that cannot tell the truth about itself. Do not hunt wisdom with a sneer, and do not laugh at a sin that is still injuring someone.

Teach it back

Explain Proverbs 14:5–9 in your own words. Identify its form and collection, trace one line from role through contextual meaning and enduring truth to application, name one uncertainty, and reject one misuse explicitly.
