Proverbs 15:20–23, King James Version

Proverbs 15:20–23

Wisdom, folly, teachability, and moral perception — A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man…

A wise child gladdens a father; a foolish one despises a mother; folly can feel like joy

A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother. Folly is joy to the one who lacks sense; a person of understanding walks upright. Despising a mother is named as folly's family face. Parental gladness is still not a license for parental harm. Joy in folly is a corrupted palate: the unwise like what is emptying them. Understanding walks; it does not only comment.

Plans die without counsel; a timely word is a joy in the mouth

Without counsel purposes are disappointed; in a multitude of counselors they are established. A person has joy by the answer of the mouth, and a word in season — how good it is. Counsel is how a purpose grows up. Established plans are tested plans, not guaranteed outcomes and not a prosperity scheme. A seasonal word is speech that fits the hour; joy in an answer is the pleasure of saying what was actually needed, not the pleasure of winning.

How this should shape us

Honor a mother in practice, not only a father in public. Do not enjoy a foolish bit just because it is fun. Take counsel before a purpose hardens, and wait for the word that belongs to this hour.
