Proverbs 20:18–21

Planning, counsel, providence, and limited control — Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good…

Purpose stands by counsel; war wants guidance; a talebearer and a flatterer are not your council

Plans are established by counsel; by wise guidance wage war. A gossip reveals secrets, so do not associate with a simple flatterer. Counsel is how a purpose grows a spine. War-guidance is a warning that violence without wisdom is extra death, not a romance of war. A flatterer's mouth and a gossip's secret-spilling are the same meeting; leave it.

Cursing father or mother puts a lamp out; a too-fast inheritance can arrive unblessed

Whoever curses father or mother, their lamp will be put out in deep darkness. An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed in the end. Cursing parents is not the same as refusing to obey a harmful command. Lamp-out is the image of a life that has extinguished its own light, not a spell you may cast. Hasty inheritance includes grabbing the estate before time, including by pressure, fraud, or a parent's still-living ruin. End-unblessed is moral harvest, not a prosperity audit of every early gift.

How this should shape us

Take counsel before a plan becomes a campaign. Leave the person who flatters you with one side of their mouth and leaks with the other. Honor parents with the mouth. Do not snatch a future that is still someone else's present.
