Proverbs 22:26–27

Wealth, poverty, provision, and economic power — Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them…

Do not be among those who strike hands and go surety for debts

Do not be one of those who strike hands, who put up security for debts. Striking hands is the public gesture of a pledge. The warning is aimed at joining a class of people who make a habit of it, not at every act of solidarity and not at standing beside a poor neighbor in court.

If you have nothing to pay, why should your very bed be taken

If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you? The second verse is the first verse's teeth. A pledge can reach the thing you sleep on. Creaturely limits include not promising a bed you still need. The line defends a household against rash liability. It does not tell you to refuse food, shelter, or advocacy to someone in debt, and it does not bless a creditor who would strip a bed.

How this should shape us

Keep your name off a habitual pledge you cannot see the end of. Do not gamble the bed you sleep in to look loyal. Help a debtor by means that do not throw two households into the street.
