Revelation 3:14-22
Laodicea: Receive True Wealth and Open the Door
Laodicea confuses self-sufficiency with wealth
The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation, knows their works: they are neither cold nor hot. Because they are lukewarm, he is about to spit them out of his mouth. They say they are rich, have prospered, and need nothing, and they do not know that they are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
He counsels them to buy from him gold refined by fire, white garments to cover shame, and salve to anoint their eyes. Those he loves he rebukes and disciplines, so they are to be zealous and turn. He stands at the door and knocks; if anyone hears and opens, he will come in and eat with that person. The conqueror is granted to sit with him on his throne, as he conquered and sat with his Father.
Lukewarm is about useless self-trust, not quiet people
The image likely plays on water that is neither refreshing nor healing. It does not mean clinically depressed, disabled, or emotionally quiet people are rejected. The door is an invitation to fellowship, not a warrant for coercive conversion or intrusion into someone's home.
Material poverty is not proof of spiritual failure, and wealth is not proof of divine favor. Laodicea's problem is the claim to need nothing.
How this should shape us
Stop congratulating a full pantry as if it were sight. Ask Christ for what money cannot buy, open the door you can actually open, and do not use 'lukewarm' as a slur against weary or disabled neighbors.
Teach it back

Best judgment: Cold, hot, and lukewarm likely work as a water image, though precise local aqueduct reconstructions exceed the text. 'Beginning of creation' can mean source or ruler, not necessarily first creature.
