Romans 16:17–20
Watch for Divisive Teaching while Remaining Wise and Nonviolent
Watch for manipulative division while remaining wise, innocent of evil, and nonviolent.
Watch out for those who create dissensions and stumbling blocks contrary to the teaching you learned, and turn away from them. Such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own belly, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. The Romans' obedience is known to all; Paul wants them wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under their feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with them.
Marking divisive people is protective clarity. It does not authorize blacklists, harassment, violence, or labeling every dissenter satanic. Final victory belongs to the God of peace, not to a faction's attack.
How this should shape us
Turn away from flattering teachers who split a church for their own appetite. Stay wise about good and inexperienced at harm. Do not hunt dissenters, and do not baptize cruelty as crushing Satan.
