Romans 9:30–10:4
The Stone Exposes Misguided Pursuit while Christ Is Law's Goal
The stone exposes a misguided pursuit, while Christ is the law's goal for righteousness.
Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness attained it, the righteousness of faith. Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive, because they did not pursue it by faith but as if it were from works. They stumbled over the stone of stumbling, as it is written. Paul's heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. He testifies that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Christ is the telos of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes—its goal, culmination, or end in that sense, not a sneer at Torah.
Israel's stumbling does not authorize contempt, conversion coercion, or the claim that Jews have no zeal for God. Paul prays; he does not mock. Gentile attainment is gift, not proof of Gentile superiority.
How this should shape us
Pray for Jewish neighbors with respect for their zeal, not with pressure tactics. Do not treat Jesus as a reason to despise the law, and do not treat Gentile faith as a victory over Israel.
