A Superscription for the Finest Song
A superscription names the poem before any lover speaks
The book opens with one line: the song of songs, which is Solomon's. Song of songs is a superlative, like holy of holies: this is lyric claiming to be the finest of its kind. Solomon's name attaches royal prestige and a wisdom-collection address. It does not yet identify who will speak, who will be desired, or whether the male lover in the poems is the king.
Read the voices first; allegory is later reception
What follows is love poetry with more than one speaker: a woman whose desire leads, a man who answers, and a chorus of Jerusalem's daughters. Jewish and Christian readers later heard Israel and God, or the church and Christ, in these lines. That history of reading is real. It is not a license to replace kisses, absence, gardens, and refusals with a code that erases the woman's mouth.
