Easy miles / Zone 2
Also known as
zone 2 · easy run · conversational pace · 80/20 · easy cardio
Community talk. May contain inaccuracies. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
In brief
Easy miles are runs kept at a comfortable effort, while Zone 2 is a training-zone label whose definition depends on the system being used.
Runners compare conversational effort, pace and heart-rate displays when deciding what counts as easy, especially when those indicators seem to disagree.
Good to know. If you cannot talk, it is not easy. A gadget is optional. Calling a hard 5K a base-builder.
What people say
- The job: Build a base they can repeat.
- 2026 r/running: “do I even need Zone 2?” is a weekly thread. The answer in the comments is usually “you need easy volume, the brand name is optional.”
- Strength Running (Nov 2024 and after): Zone 2 needs volume; a tiny easy jog is not a program.
- Seiler’s polarized model (lots easy, a little hard) is the coach version of the same week.
- Attia / San Millán made Zone 2 a personality. 2026 threads ask if it is oversold. Hybrid people keep both easy and one hard day.
- Maffetone (180 − age) still has fans as an HR cap.
- Recreational runners race their easy days because easy feels embarrassing.
- You don’t need a $400 strap to start. The sentence test is the tool.
- Watch algorithms lie on heat, caffeine, and bad sleep.
- Self already has a Zone 2 habit card. This card is the running session.
- 12–3–30 and rucking often land in this band if they can still talk.
How people do it
- Slow down until they can talk.
- Save the hard day for one session, not five.
- Hills: they walk or shuffle instead of racing.
- Podcast pace is a synonym. If they cannot follow the sentence, they slow down.
- Indoor bike + a show is how rainy people keep minutes.
- They do not check Strava average pace as a score on easy days.
- New runners: walk/run is still easy miles. See Couch to 5K.
Amounts people use
- Share people quote: about 80% easy.
- Time: 20–60 min a session; Attia-shaped talk is 2–4 hours/week easy.
- Days: 2–4 easy sessions.
- HR talk: roughly 60–70% HRmax, or Maffetone 180 − age. Individual.
- Lactate nerd target: ~1.5–2.0 mmol — lab people only.
How people keep it
- A loop they know is slow. Same route, no racing the segment.
- A buddy who will actually talk.
- Bike if the jog always turns into a tempo.
- They hide the pace on the watch if they cannot resist.
- Easy is the default. Hard needs a reason.
How it may feel
- Embarrassingly slow. Then the long run stops wrecking Tuesday.
- Ego death in public. Someone they used to pass is still chatting.
- After a month: they finish fresher. That is the hook.
- If they keep racing easy days: they are tired and “not built for running.”
- Heat / bad sleep: the same pace is no longer easy. They slow more.
- The good version: slightly bored, slightly proud they did not race.
How long
- Most weeks they run. This is the default, not a phase.
- Base-building blocks are almost all this.
- Race season still keeps most miles easy.
- A week of only hard sessions is how people get injured and take a month off.
The longer notes
- Zone 2 the brand vs easy the job. The job is what matters.
- Couch-to-5K is the named walk/run on-ramp.
- Long run is just a longer easy day for most people.
- Hard cardio / VO2 is the one expensive day.
- Steps are not automatically Zone 2. A purposeful easy session is.
More from the community
One runner in a February 2026 Q&A reported an easy-feeling run that a device classified very differently by pace and heart rate. The resulting question was about which zone label to follow, not whether the runner had tried hard enough. A report of Zone 2 therefore needs its measuring context: heart-rate zone, pace zone and a description of effort are not the same piece of information.Source 1
Good to know
- If you cannot talk, you left easy.
- You do not need a $400 strap to start.
- A hard 5K is not a base-builder.
- Zone 2 as a gadget religion is optional.
- Chest pain, fainting, or wheezing that is not just “unfit”: a person and a clinician.

Earlier wording (updated)
- Most of the week easy 80/20 / polarized talk. Recreational runners often only do 50–60% easy.
- 20–60 minutes A session, not a personality.
