Kettlebell Simple & Sinister
Also called simple and sinister · s&s · pavel s&s · kb swings and getups
Community talk. May contain inaccuracies. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
Simple & Sinister (S&S) is Pavel Tsatsouline’s kettlebell program of swings and Turkish get-ups. People choose its repeatable strength-and-conditioning practice and short exercise list. Learning the movements and progressing the weight still take sustained practice.
StrongFirst · undated01
What the practice involves
The swing gets its power from the hips. A hip hinge means bending at the hips with the hips moving backward. Driving them forward propels the bell from between the legs toward chest height. The arms guide the weight rather than lifting it like a shoulder raise.
ACE · 2025A Turkish get-up is a controlled floor-to-standing movement. With the bell supported above the body, the lifter moves through elbow support, hand support and kneeling to standing, then reverses the sequence. Each transition requires control; getting upright is only half the repetition.
StrongFirst · undatedPreparation comes before the two main lifts. Pavel’s original excerpt introduces goblet squats and stretches alongside learning the lifts, and describes near-daily practice. That frequency describes the program’s approach, not a requirement to train through fatigue or pain.
StrongFirst · undatedThe revised edition separates practice from testing. S&S 2.0 is the Revised & Updated Edition. Its rest guidance waits until the lifter can speak short sentences before another set. Even accomplished practitioners do not force everyday swings into the five-minute test window; powerful swings can need much longer rests.
StrongFirst S&S 2.0 excerpt · undatedSimple and Sinister are named benchmarks. The timed standard is 100 one-arm swings: ten every 30 seconds for five minutes; one minute’s rest; then ten alternating get-ups, one each minute. Listed Simple targets are men: 32 kg both lifts; women: 24 kg swings/16 kg get-ups. Sinister: men 48 kg both; women 32 kg/24 kg respectively. These are goals, not starting loads.
StrongFirst · undatedTimeless means the work is done without the deadline. Rest follows recovery rather than the test’s pace.
StrongFirst · undated02
Why people choose it
Get-ups practice coordination under a load. Moving through changing positions challenges coordination, mobility and control. This explains the exercise’s appeal; it does not prove S&S produces a particular physique or improves every sport.
StrongFirst · undatedA repeatable session can be easier to keep. A Reddit participant valued the predictable session and fitting S&S around cross-country skiing. They also acknowledged that its volume and limited variety would not suit everyone’s goals.
Community · Reddit03
Good to know before choosing it
Few exercises still require skill and suitable equipment. A bell must suit the movement being learned, not just the weight available to buy. ACE emphasizes technique before load or speed. Swings need clear space around their path; get-ups need floor space and overhead clearance. Sharp pain, fainting or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
ACE · 2015Two lifts do not cover every training goal. S&S concentrates practice on swings and get-ups. In community debate, readers seeking more muscle-building work or exercise variety often want presses, pulls and squats too. A named bell achievement is a specific performance benchmark, not proof of a complete fitness program.

What practitioners find in daily use
Home access can matter more than an elaborate gym. People describe keeping a bell ready at home and practicing for months. Brian Day’s blog reports roughly $400 for accumulated bells over seven years. That is his purchase history, not a current starter-kit price; progressing may mean buying more bells.
Community · Kitchi-Gami · 2023–2024Short on paper can become a longer session. A Reddit commenter reported 20 minutes for swings plus another 20–25 for get-ups. The thread’s original poster valued efficiency but became bored after three years, despite reporting progress. Convenience and enjoyment can diverge.
Community · Reddit · 2023Changing and showering can outweigh a short workout. A StrongFirst poster wanted three longer visits instead of five short ones because preparation and showering added time around 20–25 minutes of swings and get-ups. Replies offered fewer sessions or separate warm-up and stretching changes, while warning that packing more work into a visit can reduce its quality. The discussion did not establish one best schedule.
Community · StrongFirst · 2026A filmed get-up can reveal what effort hides. Practitioners describe filming a repetition to inspect its positions. Reports also mention grip and breathing work followed by feeling recovered, and shoulder discomfort around sloppy get-ups. Those experiences do not establish that a session is harmless or identify an injury’s cause.
CommunityRest feels subjective to some practitioners. A StrongFirst forum member preferred a heart-rate monitor because they found the talk test imprecise. Their monitor-based variation is personal practice, not the book’s universal rest rule.
Community · StrongFirst forum · 2026Breathing may not be the first thing that limits a set. In the same scheduling discussion, Bauer said reduced power, altered technique or muscle burn arrived before failing the talk test. They were discussing kettlebell adaptations as well as S&S. This adds a practical distinction to the heart-rate-monitor preference: being able to speak does not describe every kind of fatigue.
Community · StrongFirst · 2026Heavier goals can distract from the current swing. In that thread, one person said chasing Simple or Sinister encouraged poorer technique. Another credited two months of deadlifts more than two years of swings; a third used S&S as a finisher after other kettlebell work. These are different experiences, not one progression rule.
Community · StrongFirst forum · 2026Get-up progress ranges from a shoe to heavy bells. One returning forum member described a year from being unable to complete a shoe-balanced get-up to using 6 kg, after shoulder limitations and elbow trouble; partial get-ups had used 16–20 kg. This is a slow-return story, not a rehabilitation plan.
Community · StrongFirst forum · 2026Technique feedback can make progress feel tangible. A Reddit poster celebrated four of ten get-ups with 32 kg after rereading the book and applying form-check feedback. They also described missing a 24 kg timed attempt by one minute. Moving a heavier bell and meeting a timed standard are separate achievements.
Community · Reddit · 2022Social posts may use the name for a different timer. One X report described a 53 lb bell, ten rounds of 20 seconds’ work/10 seconds’ rest, then get-ups each minute, calling it about 16 minutes. A reply praised the speed. That reported timer differs from both talk-test practice and the official swing-test intervals.

- text
- The named standards help explain the forum vocabulary: the official Sinister achievement describes 100 one-hand swings and 10 get-ups with testing conditions. Practice toward a standard is not the same thing as performing a timed test every day. In June 2026 discussion, some kettlebell users valued the repeatable foundation while others wanted more exercise variety. A May 2026 StrongFirst member reported taking two years to a “timeless Simple” milestone. These are different versions and personal timelines, not a promised completion window.
- sources
- guide
- what
- The moving part is the gap between practice and the named test. StrongFirst's Sinister page says Pavel Tsatsouline's Kettlebell Simple & Sinister program is 100 one-hand swings and 10 get-ups. The test puts ten swings every 30 seconds for five minutes, hands switching each set, then one minute of rest, then one get-up each minute for ten minutes. A practice day is those two lifts without that clock.
- It is not a kettlebell-sport meet and not a long menu of lifts. The swing standard on that page is a one-arm swing to chest level: neutral back, feet planted, packed shoulder, straight arm at the bottom, hips and knees fully extended at the top, and a float at the top. The get-up standard keeps the loaded elbow locked, the shoulder packed, the heel down, and the transitions smooth. A rep that breaks those points is not the rep the test counts.
- The goal weights are not identical for both lifts in every row. On that page, Simple is 32 kg for both lifts for men, and 24 kg swings with 16 kg get-ups for women. Sinister is 48 kg for both lifts for men, and 32 kg swings with 24 kg get-ups for women. Chalk is allowed on a listed Sinister attempt. Belts, gloves, wrist wraps, and other hand protection are not.
- how
- Start with a bell that can be swung and gotten up inside those standards. The Sinister page lists the goal weights. It does not list a first-day bell. The lighter bell comes first. The Simple numbers are a goal, not the opening load.
- On a practice day, swing in sets of ten, one hand and then the other, on the way to 100. Pavel's StrongFirst excerpt from the revised edition says the day-to-day rest is the talk test: short sentences are possible before the next set. The excerpt says not to cut that rest to chase the clock, and that resting more is the safer side of a doubt. It also says a powerful lifter may take half an hour to finish ten sets of ten hard swings under that rule. Then do the ten get-ups, one at a time, switching sides, with the same kind of rest. Park the bell. Do not rush a sloppy get-up to hold a pace.
- The test is a separate day. Ten one-hand swings to chest level every 30 seconds for five minutes. Rest one minute. Then one get-up at the top of each of the next ten minutes. The page's example starts the first get-up at the beginning of minute six. A public listing asks for the date, a weighed bell, and the standards on camera. Gloves and a belt are out for that listing.
- The book's warmup circuit and a fixed number of weekly days were not on the two StrongFirst pages opened for this guide. The excerpt treats ordinary practice and the timed test as different days. How people space the week, and how long the talk-test rest becomes, is in the community notes. Stop a set when the back rounds, the loaded elbow unlocks, or the shoulder shrugs.
- understand
- The test is a standard, not the daily dose. The excerpt says people who have already finished Sinister still do not use the five-minute swing clock as the rest rule for ordinary practice. Test-day power was high. Practice-day power was the harder swing, because the talk test left enough rest to swing hard. Compressing every session to the test pace is the common miss. Rushing the get-up is the other one. The standard wants a locked elbow, a packed shoulder, and a quiet knee on the way down.
- Simple and Sinister are weight goals inside one practice, not a ranking in kettlebell sport. The page does not turn the practice into snatches, jerks, or a long complex. A later wave of heavier and lighter days can be someone else's plan. It is not required to understand the two lifts or the two clocks.
- This is the wrong tool for a barbell total, a sport meet, or variety for its own sake. Sharp pain on a get-up, chest pain, fainting, or disordered eating is a clinician's visit, not a heavier bell. How the practice feels in the hands and lungs is in the community notes.
