In brief

A loaded carry is walking while holding or supporting a weight, such as farmer’s carries, one-sided suitcase carries or a yoke carry.

The common picture
Heavy in both handsFarmer carry. The default picture.
Walk tall, then set downThe lift includes the put-down.
Trip options: 20–40 metres or 20–40 secondsDistance-based and time-based trips are separate versions in the notes.
Suitcase (one side) as a cousinObliques vote. Lighter than they think.
HYROX farmer stationSame idea, race heart rate, after a run.
Session examples: 4–8 trips, 1–2 days a weekThe bilateral farmer carry and one-sided suitcase carry stay distinct.

People compare grip demands, available walking space, carrying position and whether they track distance, time or load.

Good to know. More weight than they can hold tall. Shrugged-to-the-ears walks. Turning it into a Saturday event every session.

What people say

  • The job: Carry something honest without folding.
  • Dan John made carries a coaching cliché because they work and they humble.
  • HYROX put farmer carries on TV-shaped Instagram. People now train them for a race.
  • Grip is the limiter long before “core” Instagram is.
  • Strongman has heavier cousins (yoke, frame). Most gyms have dumbbells.
  • After 40 / desk people: carries feel like they fix posture. Sometimes they just feel like work.
  • Self grip-hang is hanging. This is walking with load.
  • They pair well with PPL pull day or a full-body finisher. They do not need their own religion.
  • Traps get sore. People think they injured their neck. Often they just shrugged the whole walk.
  • Uneven carries (suitcase, waiter) are useful and easy to overdo.
  • You do not need a specialized farmer handle. Kettlebells count.

How people do it

  • Pick a weight they can hold tall for ~20–30 seconds.
  • Shoulders packed, not shrugged to the ears.
  • Walk in a straight line. They look at the wall, not their feet.
  • Set down with a hinge, not a panic drop on the toes.
  • Rest between trips. Grip needs it.
  • Once or twice a week is plenty next to pulling.
  • Race prep: they practice after a run. That is the HYROX tax.

Amounts people use

  • Trips: 4–8.
  • Time / distance: 20–40 seconds or 20–40 meters.
  • Load: heavy for them, tall posture. A pair of kettlebells that feels “why.”
  • Days: 1–2.
  • HYROX: check the year’s Open weight. Practice near it, not double it week one.

How people keep it

  • They live at the end of the pull day.
  • Chalk if the gym allows — grip is the point, not a greased hero set.
  • They stop when hands open. That is the set.
  • A deload when elbows or traps stay angry.
  • They do not add shrugs plus carries plus deadlifts plus HYROX the same day forever.

How it may feel

  • First trip: “this is just walking.” Then the hands.
  • A good set: lungs and grip, posture held.
  • Too heavy: they lean, they shuffle, they drop.
  • Next day: traps and forearms. Expected.
  • After a month: groceries are easier. That is the unglamorous PR.
  • Race day carries: heart rate is already high. Hands open sooner.

How long

  • As a forever accessory.
  • A HYROX block with more specific practice.
  • They can start week one of a gym life with light carries.
  • Not a 30-day grip challenge.

The longer notes

  • Rucking is load on the back. This is load in the hands. Both are carries.
  • Dead hang trains grip without the walk.
  • Progressive overload applies — heavier, longer, or more trips.
  • Strongman programming is a different map.
  • Hypertension / hernia / pelvic-floor stories: they brace, they do not max a carry as a dare. Person if something is wrong.

Good to know

  • If you cannot stay tall, it is too heavy.
  • Do not drop weights on your feet.
  • Numb hands that stay, a pop, or back pain down a leg: stop.
  • A shrug-walk is a different, worse exercise.
  • This is not a whole program.

Earlier wording (updated)
  • A distance they can finish 20–40 meters, or 20–40 seconds, then rest.
