First pull-up

Also known as

pull up progression · chin up · assisted pull-up · first pullup

Community talk may be wrong. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.

In brief

A first-pull-up progression is practice aimed at moving from assisted or partial pulling movements to an unassisted pull-up.

The common picture
Dead hang, shoulders packedOwn the bar before you pull it.
Scapular pulls + rowsLearn to start the shoulder blades.
Band, foot, or machine assistA rep that looks like a pull-up, with less load.
Chin-up (underhand) often comes firstA common on-ramp. Not a lesser lift.
Then one clean dead-hang pull-upChin over, control down. That is the diary.
Practice: 2–3 days a weekReported examples include 10–30+ second hangs and 3–5 sets of 5–8 assisted reps.
Controlled lowers: 3–5 reps, 3–5 seconds eachBand, foot and machine assistance remain distinct options above.
First-rep timeline: weeks to months; a year also appearsThe starting ability and assistance method differ across the accounts.

People compare hangs, rows, assisted reps and controlled lowering, with different starting abilities, equipment and sticking points.

Good to know. Kipping as the first skill. Daily failure. Jumping to a 50-lb assist they never lower.

What people say

  • The job: Treat the first unassisted pull-up as a short project with regressions.
  • r/bodyweightfitness never runs out of “can’t do a pull-up” threads. That is the point of the sub.
  • It is not a moral about who is a real athlete. Bodyweight, lever, and starting point differ.
  • Women’s rooms get this question constantly. The progression is the same. The timeline is individual.
  • Negatives (jump to the top, lower slowly) are the most-repeated drill.
  • Rows (inverted, ring, TRX) build the pattern without the full hang load.
  • Bands work if they are a ladder, not a forever hammock.
  • Losing fat helps. That is bodyweight physics, not a roast. Pair with a cut card only if they were already cutting.
  • Grip hangs (Self / loaded-carry cousins) help, but they are not the pull.
  • Kipping is a CrossFit skill. It is not the first pull-up this card means.
  • After the first one: they still need volume at easier variations. One rep is a door, not a program.

How people do it

  • Practice 2–3 days, not to failure every day.
  • Start every session with a hang they can hold with packed shoulders.
  • Rows first if they cannot yet scap-pull.
  • Assisted sets in a 5–8 range that look like the real thing.
  • One or two negatives at the end if elbows are happy.
  • They film once to check chin-over and shrug-up cheating — not for a feed.
  • When one rep lands: they keep the assists for volume that week. They do not max daily.

Amounts people use

  • Days: 2–3 pull practices.
  • Hang: 10–30+ seconds, packed.
  • Assisted sets: 3–5 × 5–8.
  • Negatives: 3–5 reps, 3–5 second lowers.
  • Timeline talk: weeks to a few months for a first rep is normal. A year is also normal.

How people keep it

  • A bar they see — kitchen doorway reminder, gym first stop.
  • A written ladder so they do not jump variations in a mood.
  • Elbows get a vote. They deload pulling if tendons talk.
  • They keep rows even after the first pull-up.
  • Chin-ups count. They do not have to wait for a strict overhand to celebrate.

How it may feel

  • Early hangs: helpless. Hands burn. That fades.
  • First scap pull: a small, private win.
  • Assisted sets that get lighter: the hopeful weeks.
  • The first real rep: usually ugly, usually unforgettable.
  • A plateau: they add weight to their life or skip rows. The bar does not care.
  • After it clicks: they want five. That is a new project.

How long

  • Until one clean rep, then until three, then until a set of five.
  • The progression never really ends — weighted pull-ups are the same card later.
  • Time off the bar means they drop a variation. They do not start from shame.
  • A few months is a typical first-rep diary. Outliers both ways.

The longer notes

  • RR includes this. You do not need a separate pull-up cult if the RR is already the week.
  • Dead hang as a longevity test is a different, cuter card (Self grip-hang). Here the hang is a means.
  • Lat pulldowns are a valid gym regression. Purists disagree. Diaries still use them.
  • Losing 10 lb can be the missing “progression.” Not a requirement, just physics people mention.
  • Shoulders that pinch: a person and a clinician, not a wider grip.

More from the community

The phrase beginner progression can hide an intermediate step that is not working as expected. In a July 2026 RR discussion, a person progressing in rows and other movements felt stuck at arch hangs and asked whether to stay there or use bands. Replies differed: some described useful experiences with assisted reps, while another said bands had not helped them and preferred other pulling variations. A reply’s success story therefore needs the starting point and assistance method attached to it.Source 1

Good to know

  • Daily failure is not faster.
  • Kipping is not the first pull-up.
  • A band you never thin out is a swing, not a plan.
  • Elbow pain that stays is a stop.
  • You do not “fail at fitness” because the first rep is taking months.
