Lean bulk vs dirty bulk
Also known as
lean bulk · dirty bulk · clean bulk · surplus · gaining phase
Community talk may be wrong. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
In brief
A bulk is an intentional weight-gain phase alongside training, with lean and dirty bulk used loosely to contrast more controlled and less constrained approaches.
People debate the pace of weight gain, meal flexibility, how much tracking they want to do and when appearance or appetite makes them reconsider the phase.
Good to know. “Dirty bulk” as a personality. Mini-cuts every three weeks. A surplus with no program.
What people say
- The job: Gain while the lifts go up.
- r/gainit vs r/Fitness: lean vs dirty is a permanent argument.
- Israetel clips get passed around: “clean” is food quality, “lean” is the surplus size. People flatten that.
- Dirty bulk nostalgia is real in college diaries. So is the 20 lb cut after.
- Hardgainers often are under-eaters or under-sleepers, not cursed.
- Women’s rooms get told not to bulk at all. A small surplus still exists as a word.
- GLP-1 appetite lives on STUDresearch. This card is the surplus, not the drug.
- Mini-cuts every three weeks are how a lean bulk becomes a neurotic scale hobby.
- Weight gainer shakes are a tool. They are also how dirty bulks happen by accident.
- The scale should creep, not jump. A pound a week is already loud for a lot of people.
- You cannot dirty-bulk your way past a missing squat.
How people do it
- Pick lean or dirty for a season, not a weekend.
- Keep the lifting week. See PPL / first gym week / adding weight.
- Weigh weekly, same conditions, not hourly.
- Add food they can repeat — breakfast that does not depend on inspiration.
- If the scale jumps too fast: they were dirty by accident. They pull back.
- If nothing moves for three weeks: they add another snack, not a new program.
- Sleep. A surplus into 5-hour nights is a fat-gain recipe in a lot of diaries.
Amounts people use
- Lean talk: +200–400 kcal.
- Rate talk: 0.25–0.5% bodyweight / week in careful rooms; dirty is faster.
- Protein talk: they keep the Self daily number.
- Time: 3–6 months is a common season.
- Dirty: “I stopped tracking.” The amount is the menu.
How people keep it
- A boring breakfast they can repeat. Self owns that habit.
- A lift log so the surplus has a scoreboard besides the mirror.
- Clothes they expect to get tight. Panic-buying a cut at week 3 is the failure mode.
- A date to reassess, not a forever bulk.
- They cook more when lean; they accept pizza when dirty. Honesty helps.
How it may feel
- Lean: slow and slightly annoying. Lifts crawl up. Jeans still button.
- Dirty: fun until stairs and resting heart rate.
- Week 2 lean: “is this even working.”
- Month 4 dirty: they want a cut and a new personality.
- A good lean season: they look at the log, not the scale, for proof.
- Social food is easier on dirty and more stressful on lean. Both are data.
How long
- Months, then a cut or a reverse.
- Lean can last longer because the mess is smaller.
- Dirty is a short season in most regret posts.
- Forever bulk is just getting heavier.
The longer notes
- A cut is the sibling card.
- Reverse diet is how people exit a cut into a bulk without exploding.
- Creatine is Research. Water weight is not dirty-bulk magic.
- New lifters will gain muscle even at maintenance sometimes. They still like a small surplus.
- Health labs (ApoB etc.) live on Self. A dirty bulk is not a blood-work plan.
More from the community
The controlled end of bulking has its own tradeoff. In an August 2026 bodybuilding discussion, commenters disagreed about whether very slow gaining was worth the close tracking and long time horizon, while others preferred a more noticeable gaining phase followed by a cut. The original poster was also considering maintenance. This is more than a clean-food versus junk-food argument: it includes tolerance for monitoring, changes in appearance and time spent in each phase. For that poster, keeping the current phase enjoyable was part of the question.Source 1
