Mini-cut
Also known as
minicut · mini cut · 2 week cut · 4 week cut · short cut
Community talk may be wrong. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
In brief
A mini-cut is a deliberately short fat-loss phase, often discussed as an interruption between longer periods of gaining or maintaining weight.
People debate what makes a cut mini, how it fits the surrounding training phase and what eating pattern follows it.
Good to know. A mini-cut that lasts four months. Crash 1,000 kcal. Starting one every other Monday.
What people say
- The job: knock off a little fat so the bulk can continue without a new identity.
- Renaissance / 3DMJ-adjacent language made “mini-cut” the 2010s–20s word. 2026 gym IG still uses it.
- r/gainit and r/naturalbodybuilding: the pause between gaining blocks.
- Why it works as talk: it has a finish line. A-cut is a season. This is a sprint.
- Why it fails: they like the scale and stay in the deficit until they are a full cut.
- Not 75 Hard. That is a different religion.
- Not reverse diet. Reverse is the exit from a cut. Mini-cut is a short entrance.
- Women’s rooms still want an end date; cycle weeks may change the scale noise.
- GLP-1: already a cut. Stacking a crash mini-cut on a low appetite is how they lose gym. Self owns keep-muscle.
- Dirty-bulk hangover is the usual trigger.
- Two weeks is short. Some coaches call that a diet blip, not a mini-cut.
How people do it
- Write the end date before week one.
- Hold protein and the lift week.
- Drop a snack or add 2k steps, not both a crash and extra HIIT.
- Weekly average weight, not Tuesday panic.
- They stop on the date even if Instagram wants another week.
- Then they eat more — reverse or a planned jump.
- They do not start another mini-cut ten days later.
Amounts people use
- Length: often 3–6 weeks (some say 2–8).
- Deficit talk: about 300–500 kcal under estimated maintenance.
- Protein: hold the bulk grams.
- Lifts: hold load as they can; they accept a little gym-grump.
- Pace: a little scale change, not a peak-week crash.
How people keep it
- A calendar invite for the last day.
- The same meal template with one thing missing, not a new diet.
- A friend who will ask if they are still “mini” in week nine.
- Clothes as a check.
- They pre-decide the exit: reverse or maintenance.
How it may feel
- Week 1: easy, righteous.
- Week 3: hungry in the old bulk places. They want to extend.
- If they crashed calories: gym dies, they call mini-cuts stupid.
- Done on time: relief, then fear of eating again — reverse-diet card.
- Extended to week 12: it was just a cut. Use the cut card.
- Social weekend mid-mini: they either planned it or they spiral.
How long
- Until the written date.
- Then weeks at maintenance before another bulk or another mini.
- Not stacked year-round.
- After a long bulk: one mini, not three in a row.
The longer notes
- A cut is the long season. Mini-cut is the short tool.
- Reverse diet is how anxious people leave.
- Lean vs dirty bulk is why they needed this.
- Deload can land in a mini-cut if joints are loud — still not extra HIIT.
- Self protein-target / glp1-keep-muscle if appetite is already gone.
More from the community
Mini is not a consistently shared category in forum reports. A lifter in a July 2026 thread described a six-week phase as a mini-cut after a much longer bulk; some replies considered it a regular cut instead, and the poster acknowledged the terminology question. The account also described finding the return to maintenance difficult, despite liking parts of the short phase. Duration, how restrictive the phase felt and what happened afterwards convey more than the label alone.Source 1
