Rest days

Also known as

rest day · off day · recovery day · active recovery

Community talk may be wrong. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.

In brief

A rest day is a day away from the training being discussed, which may or may not include other ordinary movement.

The common picture
Off days: commonly 1–3 a weekThe number differs with the training split.
Optional easy walk: about 20–40 minutesThe discussion separates a relaxed walk from another hard session.
Sleep like it is the sessionThe actual adaptation day.
Not a new sportPick-up basketball plus “rest day” is a lower-body session.
Back tomorrowRest is a comma, not a resignation.

People compare complete time off with light activity and discuss how work, family commitments and other workouts affect what rest actually means.

Good to know. Active recovery that is just another workout. Guilt. Stacking missed days into a week off forever.

What people say

  • The job: Let the last session become a stronger next one.
  • r/fitness weekly threads are full of “is it okay to rest?” Yes. That is the whole comment.
  • Active recovery started as a walk or an easy bike. It mutated into a 45-minute class.
  • 75 Hard (two workouts a day) is the cultural opposite. See that card. Most people need this one more.
  • Beginners think rest means they will lose everything by Thursday. They will not.
  • Intermediates skip rest until a tendon votes.
  • After 40: rest days multiply. That is training, not age-panic.
  • On a cut: more rest, not more HIIT, is the usual stall-fix people ignore.
  • Mental rest is real — a day without tracking can be the deload they needed.
  • Parents: the rest day is often forced. They should not “make it up” at 9 p.m.
  • Self sunday-off / sleep cards are the life version. This is the training week version.

How people do it

  • Schedule the off day the same way they schedule PPL.
  • Walk if they want. Keep it conversational.
  • Mobility 10 minutes is fine. A second lifting session is not.
  • They eat like they still train. Rest days are not a punishment fast.
  • If they feel wrecked: they take the day, they do not negotiate with a spreadsheet.
  • Two rest days after a brutal Hyrox or long run is normal.
  • If rest becomes a week: that is a restart problem, not a rest-day problem. See First gym week.

Amounts people use

  • Off days / week: 1–3 depending on the split.
  • Walks: 20–40 minutes easy if they want to move.
  • Sleep: they protect the night after a hard day like a session.
  • Hard sessions / week: most people recover from 3–5, not 10.
  • Deload weeks are extra rest layered on. Different card.

How people keep it

  • Write “OFF” on the calendar so it looks official.
  • A default walk loop so they do not sit in guilt.
  • No gym bag at the door on the off day.
  • They tell the group chat they are off — accountability works both ways.
  • They do not watch six lifting videos that talk them back into the gym.

How it may feel

  • The first planned off day: itchy. They feel lazy. They are not.
  • The next session: the bar moves. They connect the dots — eventually.
  • Guilt is the main feeling rooms report. It fades when adds return.
  • A stolen rest day (kid, travel) can still count if they do not stack a punishment session.
  • Restless sleepers sometimes need the walk. Still not a workout identity.
  • Burnout feels like “I need a new program.” They needed a Tuesday off.

How long

  • Every week they train. There is no graduation from rest.
  • More often in a cut, after 40, or in a race peak.
  • A rest day is not a deload week. They can need both.
  • If they rest for a month, that is a break. Coming back is first-gym-week energy.

The longer notes

  • Rest day ≠ deload week. Weekly vs block-level. See Deload week.
  • Easy miles can live on a rest-from-lifting day. That is still training for runners.
  • Sleep, food, steps are the recovery stack rooms actually have evidence-shaped talk for.
  • You cannot out-supplement a missing rest day.
  • Pain that is worse the next morning needed rest yesterday.

Good to know

  • A second workout is not a rest day.
  • Guilt is not a training cue.
  • Do not fast all day because you “didn’t earn food.”
  • Rest is not failure. Stopping for two months because you refused rest is.
  • Chest pain, fainting, or depression that will not lift: a person, not a programming tweak.

Earlier wording (updated)
  • At least 1 full off day a week 6-day PPL still has a seventh.
  • Walks allowed Steps and easy miles can stay. The heart-rate should stay boring.
