Give people a good example to follow
The way you handle effort, mistakes and other people can influence the room around you. Bring the standard you wish was there. Be prepared. Be fair. Recover honestly when you get something wrong. You can make good conduct easier to imagine by letting people see it in action.
Leadership sometimes begins before anyone gives you a title. A group is deciding how seriously to take the work, how to treat a newcomer or how to respond to a mistake. Your behavior becomes part of that answer. You have a chance to make the next choice more constructive simply by showing what constructive participation looks like.
Prepare with care and people can see what preparation involves. Ask a respectful question and you make room for others to admit what they do not understand. Give credit accurately and you support a fairer conversation about success. These are visible choices. They give the people beside you something concrete they can repeat.
An example does not require a flawless person. When you lose patience or overlook something, correct it openly enough that people can understand the repair. Admit the error, apologize where needed and change the behavior. That response can demonstrate a useful standard too: mistakes receive responsibility rather than excuses, and improvement remains possible after a poor moment.
Choose the standard because it matters, whether or not anyone follows immediately. You cannot control the whole room. You can decide the quality of the contribution you bring into it. Think about the younger person learning from you, the colleague finding their footing or the friend facing a hard decision. Give them an example with substance. Let them see that strength can be disciplined, fairness can be practical and ambition can make room for other people.
Bring the standard you want others to see.
