Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG)
Also known as
Ca-AKG · calcium alpha-ketoglutarate
Community talk. May be wrong. Not medical advice. Not a protocol. Not for human or animal use.
Systemic metabolic intermediate supplement.
Product or salt mass as labeled—not that amount of elemental calcium or necessarily free AKG. Product identity and fill accuracy remain separate uncertainties.

Half-life in the body
A human oral Ca-AKG half-life is not established by the checked evidence.
The under-five-minute figure is for pig portal-vein administration. Human oral radiotracer work studied absorption of 5–20 g antidote formulations, not routine supplement clearance.
No animal-to-human or tracer-to-parent conversion; endogenous metabolism, formulation and exposure route remain distinct.
- Dąbek et al. — pig AKG absorption and kinetics (opens in a new tab)Original abstract via Europe PMC core API: pigs studied by IV, portal-vein, oral, duodenal and ileal administration; under-five-minute blood half-life belongs specifically to portal-vein AKG.Pig portal-vein exposure, not human oral Ca-AKG, free-acid supplement or sustained-release PK. Other administration routes were studied but this reported half-life must not be assigned to all of them.
- Mittal et al. — oral AKG radiotracer study (opens in a new tab)Original abstract via Europe PMC core API, Methods/Results: technetium-99m-labeled AKG, human oral 5–20 g single/split amounts and water-dependent absorption; animal cohorts separately described. An antidote-formulation absorption study, not ordinary 1–2 g/day Ca-AKG supplement PK. Radiotracer bioavailability is not a measured parent-AKG elimination half-life or a dosing instruction.
Felt duration people report
Some describe early subtle changes; others notice nothing over months or years.
Actual follow-ups include continuing benefit within a stack and an initially positive Ca-AKG account that stopped because of intolerance. No common single-dose duration emerges.
Self-report, different preparations and co-use; perceived changes after stopping do not measure clearance or prove dependence.
- AKG experiences — benefits, nulls and later replies (opens in a new tab)Actual thread and visible follow-ups: Biohorology August 30, 2023 exercise benefit and April 17, 2026 continued use within a stack; vauss88 years of no observable effect; 1,000 mg/day four-month null account; January 17, 2026 one-week energy/stomach report.Different AKG forms, branded mixtures and stacks; not pooled efficacy or a standard onset. Commenters' five-minute human claims, salt-superiority claims and biological-age extrapolations are not adopted.
- Ca-AKG report — initial benefits and intolerance follow-up (opens in a new tab)Actual magenk account: January 9, 2025 OP after roughly a month; brand-change replies; March 7 update reports stomach/bladder irritation even without piperine or with liposomal forms, stopping and perceived mood/appearance changes over 1–2 weeks.Long COVID, prednisone and changing products confound attribution. Subjective post-stop timing does not measure clearance or establish dependence. No new formulation is recommended.
What people say
- Training recovery talk: Human evidence mixed. forum
- Healthspan narrative: Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) is discussed for aging markers, energy, or recovery more than acute gym pumps. forum
- Slow endpoints: Users often run months, not days, before claiming anything — and still confabulate. anecdote
- Stack noise: Frequently combined with multi-agent longevity stacks that destroy attribution. forum
- Longevity mouse lore: AKG lifespan/healthspan narratives in animals. animal
Doses people talk about
- Quality flag: Assume label accuracy only if analytically verified — gray market fill error is common. forum
- Product quality: Gray-market fill accuracy and identity are uncertain; dose math assumes the label is true. forum
- Route changes the math: Oral vs SC vs nasal are not interchangeable milligram-for-milligram stories. forum
- Gram oral bands: Commonly discussed 1–2+ g/day calcium-AKG-style products. This describes product or salt mass as labeled, not 1–2+ g of elemental calcium or a guaranteed equivalent amount of free AKG. forum
- Start conservative (community): When people experiment, they often start at the low end of a charted band to gauge tolerance — still not advice. forum
- Framing: All figures are discussed trial, clinic, or community amounts — research/educational only, not prescriptions. forum
How it may feel
- Days 1–7: Oral GI/mood changes are discussed. The original conditional site-reaction note concerns injection, not the ordinary oral supplement route, and does not establish an AKG injection practice or an onset window. forum
- Months: Supplement discussions span months or ongoing use. Actual accounts range from subtle exercise benefits with continued stacked use to no observable effect over months or years. A Ca-AKG poster later stopped for stomach/bladder irritation despite perceived benefits. forum
- Day 1: Oral route and GI tolerability are more practical talking points than a “miracle” effect from AKG; the generic sting comparison applies only if injected, not to usual capsules, tablets or powder. forum
- Days 2–7: Side-effect window for many agents; benefits, if any, are easy to mis-attribute. forum
- Weeks 1–2: First honest checkpoint in self-logs. forum
Cycles people discuss
- Daily ongoing: Some community accounts describe daily oral supplementation for months or years; others stop for no benefit or intolerance. This is a use pattern, not a validated on/off schedule. forum
- Other patterns: Weeks-on / weeks-off self-protocols also appear in broader discussion, with cost and caution as rationales rather than hard science. They are not a universal AKG pattern and coexist with the daily ongoing accounts above. forum
- No magic cycle: There is rarely one universal “correct” on/off calendar across forums. forum
- Reassess: Stop and reassess if adverse effects appear; this is not medical care. forum
Timing
- Timing practicalities: People time doses around side effects, training, and sleep more than perfect PK. forum
- Metabolite turnover: The often-quoted blood half-life under five minutes comes from AKG delivered into the portal vein of pigs. It is not a human oral Ca-AKG half-life; a formulation-specific human parent estimate is not established by the sources checked here. animal
- Published PK: Human oral AKG radiotracer work used 5–20 g in an antidote-formulation absorption study. It does not establish an elimination half-life for ordinary Ca-AKG supplements, and tracer absorption is not intact-parent residence. trial
More on what it is
- What it is: Alpha-ketoglutarate (often Ca-AKG) TCA-cycle metabolite sold for longevity/training. Free-acid AKG, calcium-AKG (Ca-AKG), arginine-AKG and ornithine-AKG are different preparations; supplement mass is not interchangeable with elemental calcium or free-AKG mass. forum
- See also: Ca-AKG already cataloged under related calcium salt marketing. forum
- Research posture: Educational summary of public discussion and literature themes only. forum
- How people talk about it: Forum volume is a popularity signal for Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG), not proof it works for you. forum
- Research only: Not approved advice for self-experimentation; legality and access vary by place. forum
Stacks
- With NMN/resveratrol marketing stacks: AKG is discussed alongside NMN and resveratrol in longevity stacks; combined use makes individual effects difficult to attribute. forum
- Less is clearer: Solo runs make personal n=1 easier to interpret than five-compound blasts. forum
Storage notes
- No mix instructions here: STUDresearch does not list reconstitution, diluent volumes, or syringe unit charts. People reconstitute many different ways and vial labels differ — that content creates more confusion than clarity. forum
- Storage (general talk only): Unopened research products are usually kept cool, dry, and away from light per the seller label. Anything after first use is product-specific — follow the label, not a universal forum SOP. forum
Watch for
- GI: Possible at high doses, and lower-dose or product-specific intolerance is also reported. One Ca-AKG poster stopped after stomach/bladder irritation across several preparations despite perceived benefits; this is an individual account, not a known response rate. forum
- General caution: Research chemical and compounded sources vary; adverse events may be under-reported. forum
- Injection site (if injected): Redness, itch, lumps, bruise — technique and product quality matter. forum
- Unknowns: Long-term safety for gray-market preparations is often poorly characterized. forum
- Stack noise: Sides logged on multi-agent stacks cannot be blamed cleanly on one compound. forum
- Seek care red flags: Severe allergic reaction, chest pain, neuro changes, or uncontrolled BP/glucose need real medical care — not forum advice. forum
