Phenibut is a psychoactive drug people discuss for easier conversation, less social anxiety and a warmer mood. Some describe a strikingly good day; others feel little benefit or pay for it with anxiety, poor sleep and low mood afterward. Tolerance, dependence and withdrawal are part of the same story as the reported relief.
What Phenibut is
- A drug discussed as a nootropic. Phenibut is a synthetic relative of GABA, a chemical involved in slowing nerve activity, and acts at GABA-B receptors. It is a small molecule, not a peptide; being sold in a supplement-style container does not make it an ordinary nutrient. Official context Official context
- Names and forms matter. Fenibut and Phenyl-GABA are aliases; Noofen and Anvifen are historical medicine names. HCl means the hydrochloride salt, while FAA means the free amino acid form discussed by users; reports about those forms should keep their labels. Official context Official context Reddit · r/phenibut
- F-phenibut stays separate. The social-anxiety thread drifts into F-phenibut claims and disputes. Those experiences are not used here as Phenibut HCl or FAA evidence, and a similar name does not supply a dose conversion or a safety advantage. Reddit · r/Nootropics
What people hope to feel
- Conversation feels easier. Accounts describe less self-monitoring, easier small talk and more enjoyment around other people. The 2 g author who reported unusually good conversations also described strong anxiety two days later; the appealing evening and the difficult aftermath are one experience. Reddit · r/Nootropics Reddit · r/phenibut
- Ordinary events can feel enjoyable again. An FAA user described handling a dreaded meeting, enjoying a crowded children’s concert and getting more pleasure from music. That was a same-day report after several administrations, with no later outcome from that author established here. Reddit · r/phenibut
- Sleep and calm do not improve for everyone. One contributor praises sleep on Phenibut; another says it disrupts sleep. A separate user reported no positive effect at about 1.7 g and vomiting the next day, so lack of benefit does not imply lack of adverse effects. Reddit · r/Nootropics Reddit · r/phenibut
What people compare it with
- Alcohol and Xanax are feel-comparisons, not equivalents. Some users describe the social relaxation they associate with alcohol, or compare anxiety relief with Xanax. Contributors disagree about which feels stronger; one still struggled during presentations on Phenibut, and feeling less impaired does not establish normal judgment or coordination. Reddit · r/Nootropics Official context
- Baclofen is related, but not interchangeable. Clinical reports discuss this related GABA-B drug in supervised withdrawal care. That connection does not turn baclofen, gabapentin or another sedative into a do-it-yourself substitute, conversion chart or withdrawal remedy. Official context
Doses people discuss
These are attributed examples, not a recommended range or a progression. Milligrams, grams, product form and the total taken across a day all change what a report means.
- 500–750 mg per occasion: one lower-amount account. Thegoodlife93 describes 0.5–0.75 g for anxiety reduction and a small mood lift, currently once or twice a month. Form and route are not stated; elsewhere, a 500 mg HCl user finds it strong, while another 500 mg account reports next-day anxiety. Reddit · r/Nootropics Reddit · r/phenibut AnabolicMinds
- 2 g: a favorable evening followed by rebound. vryan144 compares this occasion with little response on earlier 500 mg, 1 g and 1.25 g occasions. Form and route are unspecified, prior benzodiazepine withdrawal is disclosed, and the later anxiety is not evidence that increasing the amount was a successful solution. Reddit · r/phenibut
- FAA: 1,200 mg across three administrations. The positive meeting-and-concert account names 750 mg, then 250 mg two hours later and 200 mg an hour after that: 1,200 mg total, not 1,200 mg at once. The route is unstated, and this repeated-use day cannot establish a single-dose response or an HCl equivalent. Reddit · r/phenibut
Half-life claims
- About five hours, or roughly six, circulates in the timeline thread. The opening poster repeats five hours; a reply says approximately six. Neither supplies a measurement, and another commenter’s idea that feeling half as strong proves half-life confuses subjective intensity with drug concentration. Reddit · r/phenibut
- The longer experience does not settle the number. The same discussion invokes active metabolites to explain next-day effects, without evidence for that explanation. These claims remain forum lore; the source problem behind the published half-life figure is described in the supporting context below. Reddit · r/phenibut
When people notice an effect
- One ingested 500 mg account: 1–2 hours, with a peak around four. That writer describes an empty stomach and also daily kratom and caffeine. Their form is unspecified; early sensation and strongest anxiety relief are separate points on that person’s timeline. Reddit · r/phenibut
- Other accounts start earlier or later. One contributor recalls 30–60 minutes with a peak near two hours; another notices little until three or four hours. Amounts and forms are not consistently supplied, and delayed effects can make an early “nothing happened” judgment misleading. Reddit · r/phenibut
How long people feel it
- Strong relief and an afterglow are different. The ingested 500 mg writer describes 4–6 hours of particularly strong anxiety relief after the peak, fading later and leaving a mild afterglow around 24 hours. Kratom and caffeine co-use prevent a clean Phenibut-only comparison. Reddit · r/phenibut
- Next-day effects vary in quality. Another timeline contributor recalls all effects gone around 24 hours; a different account describes a long, pleasant tail into the next day without specifying an amount. AnabolicMinds has both next-day anxiety and next-day calm, with the positive commenter identified as a board sponsor. Reddit · r/phenibut AnabolicMinds
- Rebound can appear after the good day has passed. The 2 g author reports strong anxiety two days later and later describes physical tension and sleep concerns. That is an adverse aftermath, not two days of continued useful benefit or a measured elimination window. Reddit · r/phenibut
Repeated use, breaks and dependence
- Occasional use is described; no calendar guarantees safety. The social-anxiety discussion includes once-or-twice-monthly use and intermittent twice-weekly use without reported rebound. The FAA author’s plan to wait until next month is only a plan, not a completed long-term result. Reddit · r/Nootropics Reddit · r/phenibut
- Breaks did not prevent symptoms in one account. Fobilas describes 250 mg twice on a use day, two use days a week, with blocks up to six weeks and two-week breaks over roughly four months. That same account reports anxiety, racing pulse, chest cramps and nights without sleep between uses; it cannot establish a protective cycling rule. Reddit · r/phenibut
- Use can shift from wanting relief to avoiding the off-day. A nine-month account moves from larger amounts every three or four days to roughly 500 mg every other day, with worsening mood between uses. The author also drinks on the following day and has pre-existing mental-health symptoms, so the story cannot isolate one cause. Personal report
What can go wrong
- Dependence and severe withdrawal need medical attention. FDA warns that addiction may develop after only a few uses, and clinical reports describe severe symptoms after abrupt discontinuation. Regular use followed by marked anxiety, insomnia, shaking or hallucinations needs clinical assessment rather than an improvised taper or another drug from a forum. Official context Official context
- Sedation can become an emergency. CDC describes reduced consciousness and respiratory depression, as well as agitation and confusion. Trouble breathing, inability to wake normally, seizures or severe confusion warrant emergency medical care; an enjoyable or apparently functional earlier period does not establish safety. Official context Official context
- Co-use changes both the risk and the story. Alcohol, kratom, caffeine and gabapentin appear in these accounts. FDA warns of life-threatening complications with other substances; adding depressants can make an already uncertain situation more dangerous, and a mixed-drug experience cannot establish Phenibut’s effects by itself. Reddit · r/Nootropics Reddit · r/phenibut Official context
- The emotional aftermath can be substantial. The repeated-use author describes worsening hopelessness and pre-existing suicidal thoughts during off-days, alongside alcohol use. This is one serious report, not a frequency estimate; suicidal thoughts or feeling unable to stay safe require urgent help, whatever the presumed cause. Personal report
- A label does not verify the contents. FDA’s April 2026 alert found phenibut and undeclared 1,4-DMAA in a tested orange Addall XR shot. That specific mixed product is not evidence for every powder or capsule, but it shows why product identity belongs in the interpretation of an experience. Official context
What the accounts reveal
- Relief and rebound can both be real parts of one account. The social-anxiety discussion contains a person with pronounced relief and severe subsequent anxiety, alongside people reporting no crash. Different prior drug histories and alcohol use help explain why those stories should not be collapsed into either a cure claim or a claim that everyone has the same aftermath. Reddit · r/Nootropics
- “Rebound” is not always a confirmed diagnosis. In the AnabolicMinds thread, a reply asks whether ordinary anxiety simply returned; the author clarifies that it feels worse than baseline. In the HCl/FAA comparison, an apparent same-author follow-up softens “withdrawal” to feeling drained; the identity is deleted, so that continuity remains uncertain. AnabolicMinds Reddit · r/phenibut
- HCl versus FAA comparisons change more than the form. One poster compares 2,500 mg HCl with 2,000 mg FAA on different days, describing stronger sociability with HCl and a briefer lift with FAA. Unequal amounts, fasting, expectations and untested products prevent a form ranking; the claimed conversion in that thread is not established. Reddit · r/phenibut
- Social confidence can become something a person feels unable to do without. The nine-month author connects Phenibut with meetings, work and even texting someone, while struggling to get through the intervening days. That change in the role of use is important even when the amount has fallen: a smaller amount alone does not demonstrate that the situation is improving. Personal report
- An easier conversation is not proof of lasting cognitive improvement. Reports emphasize enjoyment and reduced inhibition more than measured memory or learning. The contrasting presentation-anxiety and null-effect accounts leave room for incomplete benefit, and repeated use has not been shown here to produce a lasting solution to social anxiety. Research and regulatory context
- The 5.3-hour figure has an uncertain primary trail. WHO’s 2021 advance review traces it to Lapin’s 2001 review and notes that the underlying pharmacokinetic statements lack references. It is a repeatedly cited human plasma half-life claim, not a freshly verified measurement or a rule for felt duration. Official context
- Poison-center data describe harm reports, not odds for a user. CDC recorded 1,320 exposures during 2009–2019, including severe outcomes. These selected, incompletely verified reports cannot tell us the probability of harm per dose or prove that co-use was responsible for every event. Official context
- Federal scheduling and supplement status are different questions. No Phenibut, Fenibut or Phenyl-GABA entry was found in the accessed DEA list dated August 27, 2026. FDA nonetheless says Phenibut is not a lawful dietary ingredient; that limited federal screen does not settle state, local, import or other countries’ rules. Official context Official context
