Apostolic Rights Are Real and Accountable
The ox is not muzzled, and the worker is not a lord.
Paul is free. He is an apostle. He has seen Jesus our Lord. The Corinthians are his workmanship in the Lord, the seal of his apostleship. He has the right to eat and drink, to take along a believing wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas do, and to refrain from working for a living. Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?
The law of Moses says not to muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain. God is not concerned only for oxen. The plowman should plow in hope. If they have sown spiritual things among them, is it too much if they reap material things? The Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. Worker support is real. It does not authorize luxury, financial secrecy, coercive giving, access-for-money, or immunity from audit.
How this should shape us
Pay people who actually labor among you without making them grovel, and do not confuse a paycheck with proof that someone is from God. If you labor, it is lawful to eat. If you only want to eat, hide the books, or sell access, you are no longer in this paragraph.
