Saul joins the confusion as Israel rallies
Watchmen see the multitude melt, and Saul starts then stops inquiry
The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin look, and behold, the multitude melts away, and they go on beating down one another. Saul says unto the people with him, number now, and see who is gone from us. When they have numbered, Jonathan and his armour-bearer are not there. Saul says unto Ahiah, bring hither the ark of God, for the ark of God is at that time with the children of Israel.
Verse 18 differs between ark and ephod in textual witnesses. While Saul talks unto the priest, the noise in the Philistine host goes on and increases. Saul says unto the priest, withdraw thine hand. He stops the priestly action as the noise grows, prioritizing immediate battle over completed inquiry.
Philistines strike one another, and hidden Israelites rally
Saul and all the people with him assemble and come to the battle, and behold, every man's sword is against his fellow, a very great discomfiture. Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the country round about, turn to be with the Israelites that are with Saul and Jonathan. Likewise all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they hear that the Philistines flee, follow hard after them. The LORD saves Israel that day, and the battle passes over unto Beth-aven.
Confusion does not validate opportunistic violence, shame people who hid under threat, or erase divided loyalties created by occupation. The rally under battlefield chaos remains clear even while the sequence is compressed.
