Public Example and Careful Teaching Make Progress Visible
Example and public Scripture, not demanded deference, answer contempt
Command and teach these things. Let no one despise Timothy's youth. The answer is not a claim of office; it is an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Until the writer comes, Timothy is to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching. The gift given through prophecy with the laying on of the elders' hands is not to be neglected. Practice these things. Immerse yourself in them, so that progress may be visible to all.
Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. Saving here is persevering participation in God's work, not a teacher becoming the savior or a congregation becoming the teacher's proof. A gift and hands laid on do not make anyone infallible, irremovable, or exempt from safeguarding. Progress is not a performance score for spiritual worth, and youth is not a right to automatic deference.

If you teach, stay a learner: read Scripture in public, show your life, invite correction of both conduct and content, and let people see growth without turning growth into a brand. Do not hide behind a ceremony or an age.
