Train in Godliness with Hope in the Living God
Train in godliness without despising the body you live in
If Timothy puts these things before the brothers and sisters, he will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the good teaching he has followed. He is to have nothing to do with profane myths. The older English old wives' fables is a gendered idiom for discredited tales. It is not a warrant to insult women or older people. Train yourself for godliness: bodily training is of some value, but godliness holds promise for the present life and the life to come.
The comparison is not contempt for athletes, medicine, rest, or disabled bodies. Limited value is still value. This saying is faithful and worthy of full acceptance. To this end the writer labors and, in the reading the KJV follows, suffers reproach, because hope is set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. Hope in the living God drives the labor. Compulsive discipline, shame, and burnout are not the training envisioned here.
How this should shape us
Build a sustainable rhythm of study, prayer, service, rest, and bodily care that a tired or disabled person could still inhabit. Do not praise exhaustion as godliness, and do not use an old idiom to talk down to women or elders.
