Rich Believers Replace Arrogance with Generous Sharing
Uncertain wealth must become shared good, not a higher caste
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. The paragraph does not sneer at people with means, and it does not declare every rich person damned. It refuses arrogance and false security. Enjoyment is named, then immediately joined to giving and sharing.
Generosity does not purchase salvation, future wealth, healing, or divine favor. It does not launder wage theft, predatory business, or unpaid repair. God's provision for enjoyment does not sanctify luxury built on someone else's deprivation. The earliest reading in verse 19 is likely the life that is truly life rather than the later eternal life of some manuscripts. Either way the contrast is false security versus a life opened toward God and neighbor. This is conversion of privilege, not class hatred.
How this should shape us
If you have more than you need, drop the superiority, hope in God, and move money toward people in ways that increase their agency. Fix harm in the work that produced the wealth before you buy a nameplate with a gift.
