Godliness Is Not a Profit Scheme
Godliness with enough is gain; religion as a wealth machine is not
If anyone teaches differently and does not agree with the healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, they are puffed up and understand nothing. An unhealthy craving for controversy produces envy, strife, slander, and constant friction among people corrupted in mind who imagine that godliness is a means of gain. True gain is godliness with contentment. We brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. If we have food and covering, we will be content with these.
Those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. Some, reaching for it, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Desire, not mere possession, is the trap. Money itself is not the only root of every evil, and poor people are not being praised for remaining hungry. Contentment is enoughness under God. It is not a command to accept wage theft, medical neglect, unsafe housing, abuse, or injustice. The later KJV clause to withdraw from such people is absent from the earliest witnesses.
How this should shape us
Refuse any teaching that sells godliness as a path to get rich. Publish money, pay people fairly, meet real need, and notice when the wish to be rich is already steering your work. Contentment is not silence about theft.
