Authority Builds Up and Refuses Self-Measuring Comparison
Look at what is in front of you: authority exists to build, not to terrify.
If anyone is confident of belonging to Christ, that person should remember that Paul belongs as well. Even if he boasts a little too much of the authority the Lord gave for building up and not for tearing down, he will not be ashamed. He does not want to frighten them by letters. Critics say the letters are weighty while the bodily presence is weak and the speech contemptible; he answers that what he is in word by letter he will also be in deed when present. Those who commend themselves by measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves with themselves lack understanding.
Authority for building does not authorize terror, humiliation, threats, or destruction presented as necessary correction. Belonging to Christ does not immunize a faction against external review. Consistency between letter and presence is not a promise that every threatened action is right.
How this should shape us
Test a leader by whether people are actually built up. Invite standards from outside the inner circle, and refuse intimidation as if it were strength.
