Defense Serves Building Up Before a Difficult Visit
The whole defense is spoken before God so that a visit will build, not stage a humiliation.
Have they been thinking all along that he is defending himself to them? It is in the sight of God that he speaks in Christ, and all for their upbuilding, beloved. He fears that he may not find them as he wishes, and they may not find him as they wish: quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. He fears that God may humble him before them and he may mourn over many who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality they have practiced.
A vice list does not establish anyone's guilt without evidence, fair process, privacy, and a chance to respond. Sexual concern does not authorize outing, orientation stigma, purity surveillance, or the concealment of abuse. Building up includes needed boundaries; it is not a reason to avoid them.
How this should shape us
Deal with named behavior through evidence and confidentiality. Separate exploitation from rumor, protect the vulnerable, and refuse a public spectacle dressed up as pastoral grief.
