Patient Delay Leads to Holy Hope for a Righteous New Creation
The delay is patience; the new creation is righteousness, not scorched-earth piety
With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. That is not a formula for converting prophetic days into calendar millennia or calculating the end. The Lord is not slow about the promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. The delay of the coming is patience. It is not a missed appointment, and it is not a date you can set.
The day of the Lord comes like a thief. Heavens pass; elements are dissolved with fire; the earth and its works are found out. Since these things are to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be? Lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God — hastening by repentance and holy life, not by lighting fires. We wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Fire and renewal are God's to do. They are not a warrant for ecological contempt, for holy war, or for neglecting the neighbors who still have to live in this earth until that day.
How this should shape us
If you are keeping a chart of the end, close it. If you are using 'it is all going to burn' as cover to stay cruel, numb, or careless with land and people, that is the opposite of this unit. Use the extra time the way the text says God is using it: toward repentance — yours first — and toward a life that can already hold righteousness: kept promises, clean water, refused wars dressed up as prophecy.
