Deliverance Extends to Rule over Peoples
Delivered from the strivings of my people
Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people; thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
Internal strife and foreign rule sit in one couplet. Absalom, Sheba, and civil blood are in this book's memory of 'strivings.' Headship over nations is royal ideology.
Strangers submit, fade, and come trembling
Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me. Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
The language of fading and fear belongs to ancient imperial thanksgiving. It is not a charter for modern empire, ethnic domination, immigration cruelty, or Christian nationalism.
How this should shape us
Praise for surviving civil strife must not become a program for ruling strangers. Reject every use of this stanza that blesses empire, racial hierarchy, or forced submission.
