Acts 10:44–10:48
The Spirit interrupts and confirms Gentile reception
While Peter is still speaking, the Spirit falls and water cannot be refused
While Peter yet speaks these words, the Holy Ghost falls on all them which hear the word. They of the circumcision which believe are astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also is poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. They hear them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answers, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? He commands them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they pray him to tarry certain days.
The interruption is public confirmation to skeptical Jewish believers standing in the room. Sequence here differs from Acts 2, from Samaria in chapter 8, and from Ephesus in chapter 19, and therefore will not bear a single mechanical order. Gentile speech in tongues does not cancel Israel, and baptism follows gift rather than purchasing it. Hospitality after baptism keeps the household in view.
How this should shape us
When God has already marked people as received, do not withhold the sign that belongs with that reception. Let astonished insiders look and listen, and do not force this order onto every later conversion or treat tongues as a ticket you can sell.
