Peter answers criticism with the witnessed sequence

Jerusalem's charge about table fellowship is answered by a witnessed sequence

The apostles and brethren that are in Judaea hear that the Gentiles have also received the word of God. When Peter is come up to Jerusalem, they that are of the circumcision contend with him, saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. Peter rehearses the matter from the beginning: the sheet, the voice, the threefold repetition, the three men, the Spirit's command to go, the six brethren who accompanied him, the angel's word to Cornelius, the falling of the Holy Ghost as on them at the beginning, and the Lord's remembered saying, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, Peter asks, what was I, that I could withstand God? When they hear these things they hold their peace and glorify God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

The critics are Jewish believers negotiating communal boundaries, not a cartoon of hypocrisy. Peter's defense is a converging sequence plus companions, not private apostolic will. Gentile repentance unto life is confessed without declaring Israel finished. The dispute begins with eating, because table fellowship is where belonging becomes visible.
