Acts 13:26–13:41

Paul announces forgiveness through the raised Jesus

Heirs of the word hear forgiveness through the raised Jesus, with a prophetic warning

Paul says, Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. They that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, have fulfilled them in condemning him. Though they found no cause of death, they desired Pilate that he should be slain. When they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulchre. God raised him from the dead. He was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. Paul declares glad tidings, how the promise made unto the fathers God has fulfilled unto the children, in that he has raised up Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee, and in the holy and sure mercies of David, and, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, saw corruption; he whom God raised saw no corruption. Be it known therefore that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins, and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken of in the prophets: Behold, ye despisers, wonder, and perish, for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

The speech is intra-Jewish proclamation. It names particular Jerusalem actors and Pilate's role in the execution. It does not indict Jewish people as a people. The comparison with Moses' law is debated among readers and cannot be expanded into contempt for Torah or for Jews. Forgiveness is offered to the same synagogue that still reads the prophets every sabbath. The Habakkuk warning is Scripture used inside the family, not an ethnic curse.

How this should shape us

Preach forgiveness through the raised Jesus to the people whose Scriptures already promised him. Keep Pilate and Jerusalem's rulers in their actual places, and never use the law-comparison as a license to despise Torah or Jewish life.
