Acts 15:22–15:35
A letter repairs unauthorized teaching and confirms fellowship
Named messengers and a letter repair teaching no one authorized
The apostles, elders, and the whole church send Judas Barsabbas and Silas with Paul and Barnabas, carrying a letter to Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. Certain persons had gone out and unsettled souls by demanding circumcision and law-keeping. The senders say they gave no such commandment. The letter commends Barnabas and Paul as those who have risked their lives for Jesus' name, and it names Judas and Silas to confirm the same things by mouth.
"It seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us" names communal discernment with accountable messengers. It is not a claim that leaders may invoke the Spirit to end questions. Western witnesses vary in the decree's wording; the repair still rests on written terms plus personal presence. Judas and Silas, being prophets, strengthen the church. Consolation here is clarification, not a spell against future disagreement.
How this should shape us
When unauthorized teaching has harmed people, repair it with named messengers, a written account of what was actually decided, and relational presence. Do not leave a community to guess, and do not hide a faction behind spiritual slogans.
