Acts 18:1–18:4
Paul works with Aquila and Priscilla in Corinth
Displaced Jewish coworkers and a shared trade open Corinth
Paul meets Aquila, a Jew from Pontus, and his wife Priscilla, lately come from Italy because Claudius ordered Jews to leave Rome. Because they share a craft, Paul stays and works with them as tentmakers. Each sabbath he reasons in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
Suetonius and other evidence illuminate but do not fully resolve Claudius's action. Aquila and Priscilla are displaced Jews and skilled partners, not scenery around an apostle. Imperial expulsion sits behind the household. Manual work is the condition of the mission, not a lesser activity waiting to be replaced by "real" ministry.
How this should shape us
Honor skilled labor, migration, and shared household partnership as part of faithful work. Do not treat paid craft as spiritually inferior, and do not excuse an empire's expulsion of Jews as a convenient plot device.
