Acts 18:5–18:11
Opposition redirects Paul's Corinthian witness
A local synagogue rupture still leaves a believing ruler next door
When Silas and Timothy arrive, Paul intensifies his testimony that Jesus is the Messiah. Faced with opposition and slander, he shakes out his garments and says he is clean of their blood and will go to the Gentiles. He moves next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. Crispus, the synagogue ruler, believes with his household, and many Corinthians believe and are baptized. The Lord tells Paul at night not to be afraid, to keep speaking, and that he has many people in this city. Paul remains a year and six months teaching.
The dust gesture answers this congregation's refusal. It is not a verdict on all Jews. Continuity remains visible in the adjoining house and in a synagogue ruler who believes. A night promise of protection to Paul is not a guarantee you can issue to every witness.
How this should shape us
Keep speaking when resistance rises, accept local hospitality, and refuse to turn one congregation's opposition into a story about an entire people. A private reassurance given to Paul is not a safety policy you can copy onto someone else's body.
