Acts 18:12–18:17
Gallio refuses to adjudicate an internal religious dispute
Gallio declines a religious docket and then ignores a beating
Jewish opponents bring Paul before Gallio, proconsul of Achaia, charging that he persuades people to worship God contrary to the law. Gallio refuses the case as a dispute about words, names, and Jewish law, not about crime. He drives them from the tribunal. Then Sosthenes, the synagogue ruler, is beaten in front of the judgment seat, and Gallio pays no attention.
Provincial discretion is not a charter recognizing Christianity. Official indifference leaves violence on the pavement. Manuscripts differ on who beats Sosthenes; the beating itself remains in view. Rome's agent has refused the case and also refused to stop the assault.
How this should shape us
Do not confuse a magistrate's procedural refusal with justice, endorsement, or a modern church-state settlement. When a crowd attacks in front of an official who will not look, name the violence rather than celebrating the legal technicality.
