Extraordinary healings expose magical imitation
Extraordinary healings unmask borrowed names and costly secrets
God works unusual miracles through Paul, even so that cloths that have touched him are carried to the sick and spirits depart. Itinerant Jewish exorcists, including seven sons of a Sceva named as a Jewish chief priest, try to use "Jesus whom Paul preaches" as a formula. The evil spirit answers that it knows Jesus and Paul, then overpowers them. The story spreads. Fear falls on Jews and Greeks in Ephesus. Believers confess practices. Many who had used magic arts burn their books, and the value is counted at fifty thousand pieces of silver. The word grows.
The narrator himself calls the miracles extraordinary. That is a poor template for relic commerce or routine healing shows. The Sceva tradition and the value figure carry historical questions. They do not license formulaic exorcism, anti-medical claims, or coerced book burning.
How this should shape us
Refuse magical imitation and spiritual name-dropping. Let repentance become concrete renunciation, without using fear, spectacle, or attacks on medical care to control vulnerable people.
