Acts 20:1–20:6
Paul strengthens communities on the way to Troas
After the riot, encouragement and a named team take the long way
When the uproar ceases, Paul encourages the disciples and leaves for Macedonia. He exhorts those regions, stays three months in Greece, then changes course through Macedonia because of a plot as he is about to sail for Syria. A named multi-regional team goes ahead to Troas: Sopater, Aristarchus, Secundus, Gaius, Timothy, Tychicus, and Trophimus. After the days of unleavened bread the "we" group sails from Philippi and joins them.
The itinerary compresses months. Companions' travel roles vary. The plot is particular and cannot be generalized into a Jewish type. Coworkers from several regions are named before the next gathering.
How this should shape us
After public conflict, strengthen communities by presence and shared labor. Do not treat constant movement or danger as a badge, and do not erase the named companions who actually carry the work.
