Acts 20:7–20:12
Eutychus falls and is restored during a long gathering
A long night, a third-story fall, and a community sent away alive
On the first day of the week the disciples gather to break bread. Paul, leaving the next day, extends his speech until midnight. Many lamps light the upper room. Eutychus, a young man sitting in a window, sinks into sleep as the talk goes on, falls from the third story, and is taken up dead. Paul goes down, embraces him, and says not to be alarmed, for his life is in him. After breaking bread and talking until dawn, Paul departs. They take the young man away alive and are not a little comforted.
The narrator identifies Eutychus as dead and later alive. Fatigue, architecture, and prolonged speech are all on the page. The scene gives no method for repeating a restoration and no excuse for unsafe rooms or exhausting people in the name of teaching.
How this should shape us
Make gatherings humane and physically safe. Respond immediately when someone is hurt. Do not glorify exhausting speech, blame the sleeper, or promise that a narrated restoration can be staged again.
