Paul names resurrection and the council divides
Resurrection hope splits Pharisees from Sadducees inside one Judaism
Perceiving that the assembly is part Sadducee and part Pharisee, Paul cries that he is a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees, and that he is on trial concerning hope and resurrection of the dead. Dissension follows. Sadducees deny resurrection, angel, and spirit; Pharisees confess both. Some scribes of the Pharisaic party find no evil in Paul and warn against fighting God if a spirit or angel has spoken to him. The dissension becomes violent enough that the tribune, fearing Paul will be torn apart, has soldiers take him by force into the barracks.
Paul names a genuine theological issue and also uses an existing division. Neither party is all Judaism. The commander again appears as imperial force removing a prisoner from violence, not as a neutral auditor of resurrection.
How this should shape us
State the actual hope at stake without turning a divided hearing into a tactic that endangers people. Do not caricature Jewish groups, and protect a person when debate becomes a brawl.
