Acts 28:17–28:22
Paul explains his custody to Rome's Jewish leaders
Rome's Jewish leaders hear a chained man still claiming Israel's hope
After three days Paul calls together the local Jewish leaders. He says that though he has done nothing against the people or the ancestral customs, he was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into Roman hands. When the Romans examined him, they wished to release him because there was no capital charge. When Judean opponents objected, he was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that he had any accusation to bring against his nation. For this reason he has asked to see them: it is for the hope of Israel that he is bound with this chain. They reply that they have received no letters from Judea about him, and none of the brothers coming has reported or spoken any evil of him. They want to hear what he thinks, for concerning this sect it is known that it is spoken against everywhere.
The local leaders are neither assumed allies nor assumed enemies. Paul's stated fidelity to people and ancestral customs controls the finale. Roman release judgments remain his reported case history, not a cue to blame Roman Jews for the chain. Israel's hope is still the center of the custody.
How this should shape us
Explain a contested case honestly to the people whose name has been used in it. Preserve shared identity, refuse supersessionist readings, and do not make local caution into collective rejection.
