Acts 28:23–28:29
A day of scriptural persuasion brings divided response
A full day in Moses and the prophets ends in a divided Jewish hearing
They appoint a day. Many come to his lodging. From morning till evening he expounds, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them about Jesus from the law of Moses and the prophets. Some are convinced by what he says; others disbelieve. When they disagree among themselves, they begin to leave after Paul cites Isaiah: the Holy Spirit spoke well through Isaiah the prophet to their fathers about hearing and not understanding, seeing and not perceiving, a heart grown dull, ears hard of hearing, eyes closed, lest they turn and be healed. Therefore let it be known that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.
Isaiah's warning is a Jewish prophetic word spoken by a Jew to Jews inside continuing scriptural argument. It is not an ethnic death sentence. Verse 29 is absent from important early witnesses and should be treated as a textual issue, not as extra narrative. Gentile hearing is announced without cancelling Israel or crowning the nations as a replacement people.
How this should shape us
Reason patiently from Moses and the prophets, and tell the truth when a room divides. Handle Isaiah without fatalism or contempt, and never treat Gentile reception as proof that Jewish people have been replaced.
